Welcome to plaNYourCity!

This blog is a means of sharing ideas, information, photos, maps and research related to planning, architecture and urbanism.  We hope that the exchange of perspectives on planning, housing, transportation, architecture and the built environment will enhance the understanding of planning principles and practices and how they affect the lives of urban dwellers.

A group of professionals looking for an outlet to further explore urbanism and planning came up with the idea for this blog. This shared space allows a transportation planner to explore urban design, and an urban designer to explore ways to engage local populations, or a community planner to explore transportation. With your help, it will also be a place where this exploration can be vetted by anyone with an interest in their city and how it functions.

We feel the name of this blog and the logo reflect our biases fairly:

  • We are primarily New Yorkers
  • We value the planning and urbanism challenges that come with a diverse and demanding citizenry
  • We value inclusivity and the sharing of ideas
  • We want to know if what works in New York will work elsewhere
  • We want to know if what works elsewhere will work here

Our contributors are primarily New York City based, but we are hopeful that this blog can reach a global audience of planners, architects, designers, affordable housing advocates, developers, students, civic organizations, preservationists, and really anyone with an interest in architecture, planning and cities in general.

This is a place where we can challenge accepted practices and ideas and pose new questions. We want this blog to be open and inclusive and are therefore always on the lookout for guest bloggers and new collaborators, so feel free to contact us [please comment below] with ideas.

Please comment on our posts, challenge our views, share posts with others and give us useful feedback!
